Lazy Gardener – Feb 25
Welcome back to The Lazy Urban Gardener! February is here, and while love might be in the air, we know you’re not looking to embark on a whirlwind romance with your garden. That’s why we’re keeping it simple this month with tips that are all about showing your green space a little TLC—without needing a full commitment.
Gardening doesn’t have to mean hours of backbreaking labour, and February is the perfect time for a few small, manageable tasks that will keep your garden (and your sanity) in good shape. Whether you have a tiny balcony, a windowsill, or no outdoor space at all, there’s something here for everyone.
1. Clear Away Winter Debris
Your garden deserves a little love, too! Spend 15 minutes (yes, just 15) clearing away fallen leaves, twigs, or any leftover debris from winter storms. A quick tidy-up makes your space look better instantly—and bonus points if you compost the organic waste for your garden to use later.
No garden? No problem! If you have potted plants on a balcony or windowsill, give them a quick check to make sure they’re free of dead leaves and dust.
2. Top Up the Bird Feeders
Nothing says “I care” like offering a meal to your feathered friends. If you’ve already hung that bird feeder (well done, you!), make sure it’s stocked with fresh seeds or suet. Watching birds flit around your garden is the easiest way to bring some life into your outdoor space—even when it’s still chilly outside.
Tiny space tip: No balcony or garden? A simple tray with seeds placed on a windowsill can still attract birds to your view.
3. Force Spring Indoors
Want a splash of spring without waiting for the snow to melt? Force some bulbs indoors for a pop of colour. Hyacinths, daffodils, and tulips are all great options. All you need is a pot, some soil, and a sunny windowsill. Plant the bulbs now, and you’ll have flowers blooming in a matter of weeks—perfect for chasing away the February blues.
This is a perfect project for small spaces or even those without any outdoor garden—just a sunny windowsill or countertop is enough.
4.Give your Houseplants a Spa Day
Your houseplants work hard to brighten up your indoor space, so why not pamper them a little? Take 10 minutes to:
Wipe the dust off their leaves with a damp cloth (hello, instant glow-up).
Prune away any dead or yellowing leaves.
Repot overgrown plants into slightly larger containers with fresh soil.
Even if your “garden” consists entirely of houseplants, they still deserve a little love this February!
Remember, It’s the Thought that Counts
This month, focus on little actions that show your garden some love without demanding too much time. After all, the best gardens are those you can enjoy, not stress over.
Whether you’re working with a lush backyard, a tiny balcony, or just a sunny corner indoors, these tips are designed to help everyone embrace their inner lazy gardener.
Stay tuned for next month’s instalment, where we’ll talk about gently waking up your garden for spring.
